Lando Norris edged out team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the championship lead from Piastri by one point after winning in Mexico City two weeks ago, topped the Melbourne-born driver by a mere 0.023s. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before sprint qualifying scheduled for 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in realistic title contention, sitting 36 points Norris, finished in 17th place as his team followed a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to have an incident, though minor, when he lost control at Turn Four during the early running. The Japanese slid over the track edges before spinning across the gravel trap, and was lucky to avoid just a minor contact of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the conclusion of the session, turning around through the high-speed corner before the final bend on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in P19, just behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, 0.619secs behind Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with the Sauber of Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
